Even though I am once again living by a major river with ship and barge traffic, I am noticing big differences. Because so many dams have been constructed on the Columbia River, it has not much of a current, except when there has been heavy rain. The Gorge is so windy that there is usually intense wave action (so much so that it is the kiteboarding capital of the world), but the waves are often heading the wrong way, upstream.
We are expecting a major cold front with temperatures dropping to the teens tomorrow, but ahead of that we have had thick fog the last couple of days, and the air in the Gorge was so still, you could hear a pin drop a mile away. That's not much of an exaggeration ... the ambience was one of very hushed intimacy. The surface of the river looked like glass.

I know folks for whom this kind of misty gray weather is depressing. To me, it's exciting, comforting and invigorating. On a day like this, there is hope in the world.

Beautiful photographs and thoughts, Kitty.

Fabulously evocative photographs! I'm one of the 'grey haters', but those images are more mysterious and magical than grey.

Yes, Camy, you were one of the people I was thinking about when I wrote that. :)
Very peaceful, very alive. I am so glad I am living here now.
